Test screenshot readability at scale.

Upload your App Store or Google Play screenshot and see it rendered at the actual sizes users encounter — search result thumbnail, product page, and gallery view. If your headline isn't readable at the smallest size, you're losing installs.

App Store screenshots appear at roughly 30% of their full pixel size in search results. A 1290×2796px screenshot displays at approximately 387×839px in search thumbnails. Screenshot headlines should be 2-6 words at 40-60px font size minimum to remain readable at this scale. Test every screenshot frame at thumbnail size before publishing — if you can't read the headline at 30%, users can't either.

Why readability testing matters

Users scroll through App Store search results in 1-2 seconds per app. If your headline isn't readable in that thumbnail, you lose the install. Designers often check screenshots at full size in Figma and miss how they actually appear in the store — tiny, cropped, and competing with 9 other apps for attention.

The four scales that matter

ContextApproximate sizeWhat users see
Search thumbnail~30% of fullFirst 1-3 screenshots in a horizontal strip

Gallery scroll~70% of fullIndividual screenshots as user scrolls
Full resolution100%What you see in Figma — not what users see

How to fix unreadable screenshots

  1. Shorten headlines — 2-6 words maximum. "Habits that stick" beats "Build better habits and track your daily progress."
  2. Increase font size — headlines should be 40-60px at 1290×2796px resolution. If you need to squint, it's too small.
  3. Use high contrast — dark text on light backgrounds or vice versa. Avoid gray-on-gray or low-contrast gradients.
  4. Limit text per frame — one headline + optional subheadline. More text = smaller text = less readable.
  5. Test with this tool — upload every frame and check the search thumbnail size. If it fails, simplify.
