App Store metadata limits: 30 characters for the app title, 30 characters for the subtitle, 100 characters for the keyword field, and 4,000 characters for the description. Google Play metadata limits: 30 characters for the title, 80 characters for the short description, and 400 characters for the full description. Use every available character — don't waste space. Avoid repeating title words in the keyword field, use singular forms, and separate keywords with commas. This free tool validates all fields in real time.

Why metadata matters for ASO

App Store Optimization (ASO) metadata is the text that helps users find your app through search. 70% of App Store visitors use search to discover apps, and your title, subtitle, and keywords directly determine which searches you appear in. Screenshots convert the visit — metadata gets you found.

App Store metadata fields explained

App Title (30 characters)

The most important ASO field. Include your brand name plus 1-2 high-value keywords. "Aurora Habits — Habit Tracker" uses 28 characters and targets "habit tracker" searches while keeping the brand visible.

Subtitle (30 characters)

Appears below your title in search results. Use it to target different keywords than your title. "Build calmer routines" targets "routine" and "calm" searches without repeating "habit."

Keyword Field (100 characters)

Comma-separated keywords that Apple's search algorithm indexes. Don't repeat words from your title or subtitle — Apple already indexes those. Use singular forms (Apple matches plurals automatically). Don't use competitor brand names — Apple will reject them.

Description (4,000 characters)

Less important for App Store search ranking but critical for conversion. First 3 lines are visible before "Read More" — make them count. Google Play's description is indexed for search, so keyword placement matters more there.

ASO metadata best practices

  1. Use all available characters — every unused character is a missed keyword opportunity.
  2. Don't repeat keywords — Apple indexes title + subtitle + keywords together. Repeating "habit" in all three wastes space.
  3. Use singular forms — Apple's algorithm matches plurals automatically. "habit" covers "habits" too.
  4. Avoid brand names — using competitor names in keywords can get your app rejected.
  5. Front-load important keywords — put your highest-value keywords first in the title.
  6. Localize metadata — translate title, subtitle, and keywords for each market. Don't just translate — research local search terms.
  7. Update quarterly — search trends shift. Re-evaluate your keywords every 3 months using Search Ads data or third-party tools.
